Nokia introduced today the new Nokia 3200 mobile phone for music lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts at the Nokia Totally Board event in Seville, Spain. The novelty phone was also unveiled simultaneously at the Stand Out event in Bangkok, Thailand.

Equipped with a camera, color display, and multimedia messaging capabilities (MMS*), the Nokia 3200 phone brings visual communication to a wider audience. The new model also offers users an innovative way to personalize their phones with do-it-yourself clip-on covers that they can design to their liking. The transparent front and back covers of the phone frame the user’s unique design, which can include images stored on the phone, for example.

The Nokia 3200 tri-band phone will be available worldwide in two different versions, one primarily targeting European and Asian markets (GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900) and the other for the American region (GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900/1800). Shipments of the new model are estimated to begin in the last quarter of 2003.

“Nokia 3200 phone embodies urban culture, from which its personalized and fun design is inspired,” said Kai Öistämö, Director of Nokia Mobile Phones. “Our new phone is aimed at mobile pioneers who appreciate not only the latest trends in wireless communication but also fun, individuality, and entertainment. Customizable clip-on covers that users can design to their liking, as well as style-appropriate ringtones and screen wallpapers, make the phone even more personal.”

The Nokia 3200 phone features the Series 40 user interface, a built-in camera, and versatile image editing capabilities. Capturing and editing images and sending multimedia messages is easy and fast, and the phone’s high-quality 128×128 pixel color display brings images to life. The individual experience can be complemented with theme packages (e.g., “Snowboard,” “Street life,” or “Urban-chic”), which include a theme-matching printable clip-on cover, screen wallpaper, and ringtone. Theme packages can be obtained from Nokia Shop: http://www.nokia.fi/kauppa/

The novelty phone’s XHTML browser adds extra color to wireless services. In addition to text, services can also include color images and frames. The Nokia 3200 phone comes preloaded with a link to Nokia’s wireless service, offering optimized services for the XHTML browser.

Other features of the phone include:

  • Melodic MIDI ringtones
  • Phonebook that can include images and ringtones
  • Flashlight
  • FM radio
  • Infrared connection, PC Suite software
  • Java(TM) technology (J2ME(TM))

The Nokia 3200 phone is Nokia’s first phone model with clip-on covers. Three different patterned cover designs come with the phone, and screen wallpapers and melodic ringtones suitable for each design are stored on the phone. In addition, ten blank, pre-cut covers are included. Users can find more cover designs on the internet or create their own designs on their computer and print them out. Those who want distinctive covers can also design them by painting, sketching, or coloring on a blank cover template. To facilitate the creation of personalized covers, a cutter is also available, allowing users to cut front and back covers that fit the phone from printed material on standard paper.

Software developers can obtain Nokia 3200 phone specifications, application development tools, and technical support through Nokia’s global community for software developers, Forum Nokia, at http://www.Forum.Nokia.com.
